There are many different ways to help save the earth. Some organizations provide international grants for nonprofit organizationsthat implement programs on the environment, sustainability, and climate change. Some of these organizations may take an NGO management course to improve their processes to more efficiently and effectively deliver their green programs. Some may also collaborate with those that may have better resources like the United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment).
UN Environment is the main international organization for the global environment. Through the UN Environment Assembly, the world’s highest-level decision-making body on the environment, UN Environment helps set priorities for global environmental policies and develop international environmental law. Seeing that not-for-profit non-governmental organizations (NGOs) offer expertise, scientific knowledge, opinions, and realities of the communities, UN Environment accredits these organizations so that they can participate and contribute to the biannual UN Environment Assembly meetings, ultimately, helping solve the environmental problems the world faces. As of December 11, 2018, UN Environment has accredited 565 organizations representing different major groups, regions, and countries. A few accredited organizations are the following:
ADEC Philippines is a member of ADEC Innovations. It provides back office management for solutions and services in data management, healthcare, sustainability, environmental data services and knowledge management.
Environmental and Social Development Organization (ESDO), a membership based action research organization formed in 1990 in Bangladesh, uses the power of law to protect the environment, promote environmental justice and rights, and ensures a just and sustainable society.
Indigenous Peoples’ International Centre for Policy Research and Education (Tebtebba), an indigenous peoples’ organization established in 1996 in the Philippines, promotes and disseminates indigenous peoples’ worldviews on various issues including sustainable development, climate change, and biodiversity.
Nuffield International, a non-profit organization founded in 1947 in Australia, supports and governs the Nuffield Farming Scholars member nations and Nuffield program-associated countries. The program focuses on personal capacity building; excellence in agricultural production, distribution, research, and management, and local, national, and global thought leadership of its farming scholars.
World Youth Foundation (WYF), an international NGO founded in 1994 in Malaysia, aims to promote research, development and documentation of youth programmes through programmes that engage, empower, and educate the youth. WYF has organized activities like conferences, training, seminars, exchange programs, consultative and knowledge based research on several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), notably SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities, SDG 13 Climate Change, and SDG 15 Life on Land.
Interested in joining the UN Environment Assembly? Make sure your organization:
- Is a not-for-profit NGO with an international scope of work;
- Is formally registered as a legal entity in at least one country;
- Has an interest in the field of environment, and
- Is in existence for at least 2 years at the time or the application.
Is your organization eligible? Then, submit your accreditation request form to unenvironment-accreditation@un.org and the following documents:
- Letter requesting accreditation on the organization’s letterhead signed and dated;
- Certified copy of constitution/charter and/or statutes/by-laws and amendments to those documents, and list of partners if any;
- Certified copy of the certificate of registration which must include a stamp of the government authority that issued it;
- Proof of non-profit-making status, e.g. registration certificate or audited financial reports;
- Proof of engagement in the field of environment e.g. annual reports; conference and seminar reports; recent press releases and copies of media statements; newsletters and other periodicals, and
- Account of the international scope of its activities; such as headquarters and regional offices in different countries, evidence of engagement in more than one country, evidence of engagement with international organizations, activities that have an impact beyond one country.
