UN calls for greater role of women in the industry
Records revealed that only half of the world’s population of women is in the labor force compared to about 75 per cent of men and the United Nations (UN) organization is promoting on stronger women participation in the workforce.
Li Yong, head of the United Nations Industrial Development Agency Organization (UNIDO) said that women in underprivileged countries must be given importance to the growing workforce in-order to meet Sustainable Development Goals which includes eliminating poverty by 2030. He committed to focus on women empowerment in his second four-year term as the director general of the organization.
“We need to look at how you support women’s empowerment and job creation. Lots of projects like agro-industry are related to women’s empowerment, and one part of our evaluation is to look at women’s empowerment, at training, at jobs, all those things that are very concrete measures,” Li, stated in the 17th General Conference of UNIDO in Vienna.
According to Li, women is the worst hit by issues such as poverty and unemployment, and climate change further worsens the impact of such misfortunes. Violence especially in war-torn nations also put the women in jeopardy with rape and sexual violence is on the rise. Despite of this, there is an insufficient support and assistance to the said issue.
“Unless the international community tackles violence against women, the world will not eradicate poverty or reach any of the other Sustainable Development Goals,” said Secretary-General António Guterres of UN.
